About Us

The mission of the LWVLCF Direct Democracy AT is to promote local, state and national governmental systems and procedures that are open, representative, accountable, ethical and responsive to the populations they represent.

In 2025, the Direct Democracy Action Team accomplished many things, among them:
  1. Ted Fuller presented a talk "Reforming the Electoral College" that promotes North Carolina join the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (NPVIC) to 8 different community groups reaching a total of 260 voters.
  2. Claudia Tidwell led a joint LWVLCF and LWVNC team that developed a petition urging legislators to support the NPV Bill for North Carolina to join the NPVIC. The petition went public in November and had been signed by over 1,000 voters in 46 counties by early December.
  3. At the October Membership Luncheon, DDAT sponsored a Hot Topic presentation by LWVNC CI AT Co-Chair Dr. Jennifer Bremer, "Citizen Initiative: By the People, For the People". 42 League members attended in person or online. The presentation has been uploaded to the LWVLCF website.
The goals of the DDAT in 2026 are:
  1. To develop a strategic plan for educating voters and state legislators on the pros and cons of citizen-led ballot measures for North Carolina.
  2. To identify and develop relationships with potential pro-democracy organizations for a coalition to advocate for the NPVIC and citizen-led ballot measures.
  3. To organize and hold a series of community debates on the pros and cons of North Carolina joining the NPVIC.
  • To educate our local state legislators on the pros and cons of signing the NPVIC.
