Direct DemocracyAt the LWVNC recently announced an update about the National Popular Vote compact passed in Virginia. https://www.nationalpopularvote.com/state/va Voter ServicesYour VOTER SERVICES team at work… Here are your opportunities to help: Brunswick County:
Observer CorpsObserver Corps Needs You! The LWVLCF Observer Corps currently has ten active observers doing a great job covering government meetings in Brunswick, New Hanover and Pender counties, but we still have some meetings that would greatly benefit from an additional observer or even part-time observation. Could you fill an opening by attending one of these local meetings? For more information please contact Leslie Antos at [email protected]. Brunswick County: Leland City Council - 3rd Thursdays | Board of Education - 1st Tuesdays | County Commissioners -1st & 3rd Mondays New Hanover County: Wilmington City Council -1st & 3rd Tuesdays | Board of Education - 1st Tuesdays | County Commissioners -1st & 3rd Mondays Pender County: Board of Education - 2nd Tuesdays | County Commissioners -1st & 3rd Mondays Education Action TeamSince January, we have presented the Community Resolves to the NHC School Board, NAACP, and several retired school personnel associations. We have also presented to the NHC School Board data on the number of private schools in NHC receiving Opportunity Scholarships/Vouchers and the amount of tax money they have received since 2015. The education team continues to monitor the NHC School Board. Right now they are finalizing their budget for 2026-2027. Without a secure financial flow from the state (as of this writing NC still has not passed a budget) nor the Federal Government (Dept. of Education is closed) all eyes are looking toward our County Commissioners to make up the difference. Also, LifeWise, a National Christian organization, has requested a MOU for off-campus weekly bible study for students to voluntarily participate in. This is worrisome. Finally, NHC Schools has received approval from the County Commissioners to pursue a $320.5 Million School Bond which will not be for building new schools, but repairing or replacing old schools. The bond, if approved, may be on the ballot in November. LWVNC/State Education Team: The State Education Action Team continues to collect signatures for the Community Resolves to Fully Fund Public Education. If you are able, please continue writing or calling your NC representatives requesting they 1. Fully fund public schools, 2. Reinstate family income gap on Opportunity Scholarships/Vouchers, or 3. Change the law that allows corporations to reach a zero tax rate by 2030. LWVNC members will meet in Raleigh on Wednesday, May 20th to deliver documentation to legislators. The Team is thinking about meeting with legislators and if they are in session, sitting in the gallery in purple. We will meet at the Legislator building beginning at 10:30 am and finish around 2:30pm. If anyone is interested in going, contact Barbara H. Anderson, [email protected].
