In the ceremonial passing of the baton, Julia and Robin shared the following: <br /><br />Julia: As with any enduring institution, current leadership stands on the shoulders of past leaders. The League of Women Voters is an enduring institution of the Lower Cape Fear community, originally established in 1972. Over the years, we have experienced both challenges and successes, yet today we stand stronger and more resilient than ever, steadfast in our mission to Empower Voters and Defend Democracy.</span><br /><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">Looking ahead, we will undoubtedly face new challenges, and I am confident that Robin Judd, our new President and the newly appointed Board of Directors will rise to meet them. I know we are all grateful that she will continue to offer her insight and steadying hand as Vice President of the upcoming board.</span><span style="color:rgba(0,0,0,var(--O42jJQ,1))"> </span><span style="color:rgba(0,0,0,var(--O42jJQ,1))">As Julia&nbsp;mentioned, we have met and overcome many challenges over the years. In the next two years, we will continue to encounter new obstacles to voters&rsquo; rights and our constitutional freedoms, added to the current challenges we have already seen. If you want to go far, go together.&rdquo; From the minute I joined, I have been in awe of the way the League of Women Voters of Lower Cape Fear pulls together to get things done. And I know, as a group, we will continue to get things done. For more information please contact Leslie Antos at <a href="mailto:leslieant@aol.com">leslieant@aol.com</a>.<br /><strong>Brunswick County:</strong>&nbsp; Leland City Council - 3rd Thursdays |&nbsp; Board of Education - 1st Tuesdays | County Commissioners -1st &amp; 3rd Mondays<br /><strong>New Hanover County: </strong>Wilmington City Council -1st &amp; 3rd Tuesdays | Board of Education - 1st Tuesdays | County Commissioners -1st &amp; 3rd Mondays<br /><strong>Pender County: </strong>Board of Education - 2nd Tuesdays | County Commissioners -1st &amp; 3rd Mondays</div>  <h2 class="wsite-content-title">Education Action Team</h2>  <div class="paragraph"><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">Since January, we have presented the Community Resolves to the NHC School Board, NAACP, and several retired school personnel associations.&nbsp; We have also presented to the NHC School Board data on the number of private schools in NHC receiving Opportunity Scholarships/Vouchers and the amount of tax money they have received since 2015.&nbsp; The education team continues to monitor the NHC School Board.&nbsp; Right now they are finalizing their budget for&nbsp; 2026-2027.&nbsp; Without a secure financial flow from the state (as of this writing NC still has not passed a budget) nor the Federal Government (Dept. of Education is closed) all eyes are looking toward our County Commissioners to make up the difference.&nbsp; Also, LifeWise, a National Christian organization, has requested a MOU for off-campus weekly bible study for students to voluntarily participate in. This is worrisome. Finally, NHC Schools has received approval from the County Commissioners to pursue a $320.5 Million School Bond which will not be for building new schools, but repairing or replacing old schools. The bond, if approved, may be on the ballot in November.<br />&#8203;<br /></span></span><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">LWVNC/State Education Team:</span></span><br /><span></span><span><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">T</span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">he State Education Action Team continues to collect signatures for the Community Resolves to Fully Fund Public Education.</span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"> If you are able, please continue writing or calling your NC representatives requesting they 1. Fully fund public schools, 2. Reinstate family income gap on Opportunity Scholarships/Vouchers, or 3. Change the law that allows corporations to reach a zero tax rate by 2030.&nbsp; </span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700">LWVNC members will meet in Raleigh on Wednesday, May 20th to deliver documentation to legislators. </span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">The Team is thinking about meeting with legislators and if they are in session, sitting in the gallery in purple.&nbsp; We will meet at the Legislator building beginning at 10:30 am and finish around 2:30pm.</span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight:700"> If anyone is interested in going, contact Barbara H.
